Since 1955, when Idabell Kleinhans invited a number of artists to her South Hills home for tea, the South Hills Art League (SHAL) has grown and flourished. It is a strong, vibrant league of more than one hundred artists working in an amazing variety of media and with diverse backgrounds: young, old, self-taught, and professionally trained.

SHAL is fertile ground for any artist wanting to grow in the pursuit of art, whatever his or her goals may be. Artists join the League for many reasons. For artists who earn their living through their artwork, the League provides another outlet for their work. Others use their talent to enhance their own lives and give enjoyment to those viewing their work, with sales as an added benefit. The League gives artists an opportunity to meet other artists and share information and inspiration; artists new to  exhibiting can learn about presenting and merchandising their work.

The League holds several meetings a year at the McMurray Art League Studio (in the McDowell Shops on Rt 19, behind Atria's). After a brief business meeting, members have an opportunity to socialize, as well as hear an educational presentation. Meetings are open to the public and guests are welcome.
